On the 8th April 2014, Microsoft will cease all support for customers with Windows XP installed. For XP users this means no more security patches, even for newly-discovered Trojans, viren etc – an untenable situation for most XP owners. As of the end of 2012, 41% of PC users were still using XP. Migration is a tricky maneuver
However, a migration from one Windows to another is far from easy. Windows 8 for example only supports in-place migrations from identical editions (e.g. from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 8 Home). Both must be in the same language and both either 32 or 64-Bit. Migration between different editions is not supported (e.g. from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 8 Professional). What often happens is that you’ll quickly notice something very important is missing: your personal data, settings, and programs that were available on your computer’s former operating system. You could, of course, transfer each of them one by one, and then reinstall them in a tedious process that will cost you huge amounts of time and stress.
