The only protection is to make an image of the Windows 10 system immediately after the upgrade, literally the first thing you should do. And not just a file backup, but a complete system copy so that should a hardware defect arise you can restore your entire PC system.

So if you try to restore an image that is older than 12 months, it can no longer be updated. As far as Microsoft is concerned, this PC was not connected to the net for 12 months and has literally been left behind. A harsh reality indeed. What can be done?
